[Character name] Sanji
[Age] 19
[Canon] One Piece
[Point in time taken from canon] Directly after chapter 513 of the manga, AKA he’s just been sent flying by Kuma. I plan on canon updating him after current events in the storyline get wrapped up and we have some more answers about…certain okama islands and just how they’re affecting Sanji, so hopefully that will be soon!

[Background]

Sanji's page on the One Piece wiki.

One Piece is looong and involved, so linking to his background is easiest. If anything needs to be elaborated on, just let me know! I’ve been playing Sanji for two years now in other games, so I’ve got a decent amount of head canon to flesh out his childhood and such, too.

[Personality]

The quickest way to sum up Sanji is to say that he’s the Straw Hat’s foulmouthed, chain-smoking, ass-kicking, lovesick dork of a chef. In other words, he’s basically an oxymoron embodied. This is evident from the very first time he shows up in the story. He’s first seen working at a seafaring restaurant, and right off the bat you learn that he’s a flirt, that you shouldn’t waste food around him, and that he can and will kick the crap out of you if you piss him off.

Sanji’s background has everything to do with who he is. Stranded on a barren rock of an island for nearly three months when he was younger with very little food to get by on (and none at all for the second half of his time there) has completely shaped his views on cooking and the like. He knows just how valuable food is and considers wasting it to be a huge travesty, to the point that knowingly throwing it away crosses a personal line with him and is basically unforgivable. After being rescued from the island with the ex-pirate captain Zeff, Sanji began learning to cook in the restaurant he and Zeff opened together. Now, some nine to ten years later, Sanji considers himself to be one of the best cooks on the whole ocean. It’s his passion in life, and—because nearly everyone in One Piece has a dream goal they’re trying to reach—you also discover that Sanji’s dream, of course, has to do with this part of his make-up. He wants to find All Blue, the elusive ocean that many people doubt actually exists, where fish from all four seas of the world swim together. It’s considered a cook’s paradise, and Sanji wants nothing more than to prove that it’s there.

Girls, you quickly learn, are Sanji’s second passion in life. He considers himself to be a huge ladies man, and always dresses the part. His wardrobe is flamboyantly awesome in colorspreads, but for the most part in the actual story he is nearly always wearing a black suit and tie. Impressing the ladies is only part of Sanji’s obsession with them, because more often than not he’s not impressing them at all and is instead falling all over himself to do their bidding. Complete with flailing, spinning, crazy hearts in his eyes, and probably drooling. He goes from suave to a pathetic mess in less than a second (and then can snap back and turn into a snarling beast in even less time) and will do literally anything to make a woman happy. Sometimes his love for making women happy and his respect for them goes almost too far, to the point that he refuses to fight them even when they’re an obvious enemy. This has gotten him into trouble before, in fact resulting in one of his few losses in a fight in the entire series. He claims that he absolutely cannot fight a woman and says that it’s because of his upbringing. He doesn’t mean it as an insult to them, it’s just the way he does things.

Sanji’s attitude towards men, however, is the complete opposite. He acts vastly different around them. Every other word out of his mouth is a curse, he’s much more crass and crude, and he has no problem kicking them upside the head. Literally kicking, though, he doesn’t ever fight with his hands—yet another part of his upbringing. He was taught to fight by Zeff, and both consider a chef’s hands to be their most important tool and therefore do not use them in battle. Despite the bipolar outward appearance of hating men and loving women, there IS an in between and Sanji does manage to form close bonds with his entire crew, regardless of what gender they are. He can have real conversations with his Nami-san and Robin-chan, fawn over them whilst serving them special treats half a second later, and then promptly turn around and try to kick Zoro’s ass for snorting at him. On occasion he’ll even let his inner dork out and dance around with Usopp and Luffy.

On the battle side of things, Sanji is one of the strongest fighters the Straw Hats have. He’s considered one of their top three, alongside Luffy and Zoro, despite not having one of the top three bounties. Sanji is, however, the strongest person on the crew who does not have a Devil Fruit or fight with a weapon. Along with being one of the powerhouses, Sanji is also SMART. He’s often the tactician of the crew and sometimes disappears to secretly do something behind the scenes that will later prove to be hugely beneficial and more often than not, actually save the entire crew. Sanji is very perceptive and even outside of battle, he has a way of seeing things that others do not and isn’t afraid to tell people what they need to hear without softening the blow. Because of this, he also tends to be good at giving advice.

Sanji is one of the more complex characters I have ever come across. He’s rarely, if ever, seen without a cigarette in his mouth; his favorite word is apparently “shitty”; he’s a lovesick, flaily fool with any woman who crosses his path and a complete bastard most of the time otherwise; he considers himself to be very manly, a chivalrous prince (even going so far as to give himself the nickname “Mr. Prince”) and a calm, cool (emphasis on the cool), collected individual when in fact his temper is practically nonexistent and he will blow his top at any guy who so much as steals a cookie without asking; he’s a huge dork and is extremely capable of acting exactly like the nineteen-year-old teenager he is; and underneath all of that, he’s fiercely loyal to his family and friends. Fiercely loyal and protective, especially of the weaker members of the crew, but never does he actually doubt them or what they’re capable of with their own abilities. On occasion, though, Sanji does seem to have a self-sacrificing streak in him that has gotten him into trouble more than once. Luckily, usually someone steps in and literally knocks some sense into him (or just plain knocks him out). And thank goodness for that, because he’s one character I would hate to see the end of.

[Abilities]

Sanji’s main and most obvious ability is that he is an expert on kicking. His fighting style totally revolves around the use of his feet. It’s usually said to be a type of martial arts, possibly a combination of Capoeira, Tae Kwon Do, Tan Tui, and Savate. While it doesn’t have a specific name in the series, sometimes it is referred to as the “Red Leg” style, as that is the name Zeff was given when he was fighting with it. Sanji uses his legs and feet to defeat enemies, smash through walls and boulders, and kick the crap out of creatures that are way larger than him. He even has several combined moves with some of his crewmates that involve launching them at whatever they might be fighting. His kicks also have the unique ability to transform someone’s facial structure if Sanji so desires to use them this way. Because of this there are two characters in the series who Sanji has given a complete plastic surgery-type makeover.

As stated before, Sanji only uses his feet while fighting because he considers his hands to be his most precious tools as a chef and cannot risk injuring them. This does not, however, exclude the use of handstands in battle, and many of Sanji’s moves involve him flipping into one whilst swinging and spinning his legs around at enemies. So while his lower body is, yes, amazingly and ridiculously powerful, his upper body strength is nothing to laugh at either. In fact, in the first chapter Sanji shows up in, he is seen lifting a man entirely off his feet using only one hand. He’s a complete powerhouse and it’s obvious why he is considered one of the top three fighters on the crew. Despite this, however, he is also still human and is more than capable of getting heavily injured. More often than not he’ll hop right back up and keep on pummeling whoever he’s fighting, but sometimes he isn’t so lucky.

One of Sanji’s newest moves is called Diable Jambe. He basically discovers the power to heat his lower legs up so much that they turn bright red, which he does by spinning rapidly in place. Supposedly the heat of the attack is so high that contact for one second would set a person aflame.

Another thing Sanji is evidently skilled at is fighting with knives, since they’re a chef’s tool and he pretty much dominates anything to do with a kitchen. This has only happened once thus far in the series, due to Sanji’s complete aversion of directly using his hands in battle. The only reason he broke out this particular talent is because he was fighting in a kitchen against someone who was using food as a weapon. He had some very nifty moves with the knives, but it’s something that we, unfortunately, probably won’t be seeing much of in the future.

Sanji is often the tactician of the crew, too, as was also previously mentioned. He’s very perceptive and smart and can see things that others don’t. He won’t hesitate to silently go off on his own and make something happen that will eventually prove helpful to the crew’s situation. His self-assigned Mr. Prince spy missions have gotten the crew out of several sticky and dangerous positions.

Outside of battles and the like, Sanji’s most important ability is that he is an amazing cook. He is the sole chef on the Thousand Sunny, and before he joined Luffy’s crew he was the Assistant Head Chef on the Baratie (the seafaring restaurant he and Zeff started). He loves cooking and will feed any hungry person or animal, regardless of whether they have money or are an enemy. He does this because he knows exactly what it is like to go without food, seeing as how he nearly starved to death when he was just a kid. Not only is Sanji an awesome chef, but he can make a feast out of the smallest and poorest choices of food, and it will no doubt taste delicious. All that, and he’ll have it prepared in under a minute, too.

[Other important stuff]

Despite being badass and awesome, Sanji is also sort of made of fail. This is kind of a running gag in the series. He’s constantly getting shafted by women, being made a fool out of, and can’t even seem to get a proper bounty poster. As such, he is the only member of the crew who has a drawn picture on their poster and it, quite frankly, looks ridiculous. He’s very touchy on this subject.

Sanji is also very easy to irritate and he doesn’t take teasing well, though he will gladly return the barb and mess with you straight back, he’ll just be trying to scream your head off while doing it. If he gets to you before you get to him, however, he will take great pleasure in poking fun at you first. Unless, of course, you’re a girl.

It should also be noted that while Sanji is a self-proclaimed ladies man and a lover and charmer of all women everywhere, he never actually seems to succeed in his attempts at wooing.

[Sample post]

(this wouldn’t be the first post he makes, that’s reserved for the whole possibly cliché WTF WHERE AM I dealio, accompanied by a lot of panicking about his crewmates due to the circumstances under which he’s arriving – but this post would come probably not too long after that one, still fairly early in his stay here)

“This shitty island is really getting on my damn nerves. If it’s even an island—I keep thinking we’re still on the Grand Line, but Luffy says that ain’t true… I half don’t believe him, and if Franky were here I’d tell him to get his ass moving and build us another shitty ship so we can get a fucking move on. There’s gotta be a beach or something around here, right? A beach with an ocean, not this shitty lake—don’t even get me started on the damn…floating mountain either. Seriously, what the hell’s keeping us from sailing out of this place?

Fuck, I haven’t lived on land in…I don’t even know, I can’t actually remember living on land. I like being on a ship, and this shitty…cabin or whatever is NOT a ship. At least there’s a kitchen…and food. Plenty of that. Heh, guess Luffy wouldn’t have made it this long if he wasn’t getting his daily crapton of meat.

Still wondering where my lovely ladies are, can’t believe they’re not here and that I’m stuck with these other idiots instead. I mean, guess it’s…okay, having them around. Nice to have SOME crewmates here, but…

NAMI-SAAAAAN, ROBIN-CHWAAAAAAAN!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU???!?”

[What do you hope to do with this character in Somarium?]

First and foremost, he’s going to locate everyone he can from his crew, obviously. But after getting to know more people in the game and once I’m used to playing him in this setting, I’m thinking he might try to open his own restaurant or something. Before that, though, I really just want to have fun learning how the game works and sending him on various adventures.

[Which rule was your favorite and why?]

I like everything under the “Be Active” part! The option of being able to have threads to prove you’re active is always pretty cool. I definitely plan on posting, but much of my roleplaying comes from commenting and threading so I like being able to count that.

[Where did you hear about Somarium?]

I’ve been LJRPing for years now and I’ve seen it around here and there. I’ve probably mostly seen it come up on [livejournal.com profile] dear_mun, though.

[Any questions?]

Not at the moment! Luffy-mun has been very helpful in explaining some of the specifics of the game to some of us. :D

I do want to mention here, though, that I’m going to be out of the country and without internet access from July 16th to July 26th. If I’m accepted, what would that mean for my activity requirements for this first month? I’ll definitely try to get as much of Sanji’s journal set up and ready to go this week as I can, but I don’t want to introduce him to the game and then promptly disappear for ten days, so I probably won’t play around until I get back. Thanks!!
